Refrigeration Without Power

Comments

Remember in 1999 when they were coming out with all those "greatest inventions of the 20th century" lists? It always surprised me that nobody ever mentioned refrigeration. I mean sure, electricity, computers and the nuclear bomb were important, too... but still.
I hope you all came through safe and sound and the only damage was to one tree (not that it's gonna be fun cleaning that up!)
[this is good]

Basic Physics.

This same principal is used to cool CPU's in the computer. I could imagine that some ingenious person could take this one or two steps further and comeup with something besides wet sand that is permanantly sealed between the two pots. Then of course some sort of liner that makes it a little more safer for storing foods in. Terra-Cotta is supposed to be hazardous to eat out of as I recall.

Great little invention though.

Refrigeration is not exactly a 20th Century invention. Perhaps the "modern" methods we use today are, but there are plenty of low-tech ways like this to keep things cold. I really liked the more human aspects of this story, which is why I flagged it.
